Industrial transformation and Operational Excellence. Leadership through people and culture.

Executive · Advisor · Consultant · Researcher

Full name: Ignacio Sánchez Gatell

I help leaders make industrial transformation decisions and turn them into practical action. My work connects Operational Excellence, technology, sustainability and innovation with leadership through people and culture. My experience includes executive roles and internal assignments at EGA and EDGE, alongside earlier professional work.

About

From industrial practice to research

My early experience included an internship in Iberia’s engine laboratory, followed by aluminium production, European operations, enterprise transformation and executive roles in the UAE. I have worked in established industrial organisations and a technology start-up, leading teams, developing strategy and building systems that connect business goals with daily work.

I hold an International PhD, Cum Laude, in Business and Economics from the University of Oviedo. My research builds on that industrial experience, with a focus on culture, leadership and the integration of Lean, Digital and Circular approaches.

Experience in practice

Selected professional experience

These examples relate to my professional roles and internal assignments. Results were achieved with the teams involved and are presented in their original organisational and time context.

From Training Centre to Centre of Excellence

EDGE Group · Vice President, BRIDGE Excellence & Process Industrialization · November 2024–May 2026

Connecting practical learning, technology and improvement projects with business value.

View project details

The Learning & Innovation Factory was focused on classroom training and operated as a cost centre. Technology was available, but industrial use cases and projects connecting learning with production were limited, and the economic impact of activities was not measured.

With my team, I led the design and execution of the strategy to transform LIF into BRIDGE: a Centre of Excellence connecting practical learning, technology and improvement projects. The mandate included a new identity, team reorganisation, relocation to new facilities and an orientation towards operating as a profit centre, with external training and projects.

Result: External revenue increased by 400% from 2024 to 2025 through external training and projects. Separately, Operational Excellence projects generated savings for internal customers and within the unit’s own operations.

Protecting People and Maintaining Operations during COVID-19

Emirates Global Aluminium · COVID-19 emergency response lead · 2020–2023

Coordinating a company-wide emergency response to protect people and preserve industrial continuity.

View project details

Continuing my responsibilities in Occupational Hygiene and the Medical Center, I led EGA’s emergency response. At critical points, staffing availability brought the plant within two or three days of a potential operational shutdown.

I coordinated the Medical Center, testing facilities, HR, Facilities Management, security and access control, and emergency purchases. The response covered PCR testing, infections, PPE, isolation, vulnerable employees, medical interventions, rotations and return to work. Island mode isolated essential operations from outside contact, supported by personnel, transport and logistics arrangements.

Result: Operations continued without a COVID-19-related staffing shutdown during the period under my responsibility. The strategy covered 7,000 EGA employees, with support for families when needed, within a combined population of approximately 20,000 people.

Building and Integrating an Employee-Driven Innovation System

EMAL · 2009–2014; integration and development at EGA · 2014–2020

Developing employee ideas, process innovation and Lean projects into a coordinated improvement system.

View project details

I established EMAL’s employee innovation system from the construction phase in 2009. With my innovation team, I subsequently led the integration of the EMAL and DUBAL systems and expanded the approach beyond a basic employee suggestion programme.

The system connected Kaizen Teian, Kaizen Events and process innovation through Tamayaz, alongside internal and external technology challenges and intellectual property registration arising from innovation. R&D formed part of the wider innovation landscape but was outside my responsibility. My team worked with operations to deliver improvement and Lean projects.

Result: In 2019, the system received approximately 40,000 employee ideas in one year, around six to seven per employee. The combined innovation system and Lean projects delivered USD 18+ million in annual audited savings. This total covers the combined system; it is not attributed to employee suggestions alone.

Professionalising a Technology Startup for Growth

Gamium–DIDIT · Chief People Officer, then Chief Operating Officer · September 2021–December 2023

Aligning people, processes and technology with growth across metaverse and digital identity businesses.

View project details

The company grew from six founding partners to more than 25 people. Its two technology business lines were Gamium, an operational metaverse with monetisation, and DIDIT, a digital identity application using blockchain for transactions and identity verification, with KYC and KYB use cases.

Working first as Chief People Officer and then Chief Operating Officer, I helped align strategy, organisational structure and service delivery with this growth. The work connected people, processes and technology in a fully remote organisation, including process development supporting ISO 27001 certification. I subsequently supported the transition to centralised, office-based working in Barcelona.

Result: The company developed a strategy and structure aligned with its growth, professionalised its service delivery and achieved ISO 27001 certification within the relevant process scope. The assignment concluded after supporting the transition to the new operating model.
